Key2Green — March Edition:

Winter’s Aftermath — The Road To Recovery Starts Soon With Key2Green!

Hello Key2Green family! I hope you’ve been well and you’ve had a chance to get outside, even for a minute, to breathe in that fresh (and warmer) air … What a great feeling after this long snow-covered winter!

March 20th marks the beginning of spring, and you might be feeling “the itch” to get outside and do “things.” While some tasks are best left for a bit later, there are some you can start doing now. Key2Green is here to guide you on the path to a healthy lawn that will soon be waking up:

  • When to Fertilize - Fertilizing your lawn isn’t recommended until the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees consistently – that’s when grass officially wakes up and ready to eat – and yellow forsythia shrubs bloom. Again, still a few weeks away. You might be seeing “big-box” companies out there pushing fertilization. Don’t even look at them, as it is not time yet. Key2Green will call you soon, and for those thinking of joining, please contact Key2Green for free estimate now!

  • Snow Mold - Chances are you may have some of this yuck in your lawn. What is it, exactly? Snow mold is an ugly, but harmless, fungus that looks like grayish, matted, crusty patches of grass. The long-term snow we’ve had provided a good environment for it. But in short, it’s nothing to worry about, as it’s only temporarily cosmetic and doesn’t damage grass roots. Once your grass wakes up, it will push the snow mold up and out, and the first mow will eliminate it completely.

  • Raking - This is best left until the ground is firmer. The soil is still saturated, and you don’t want to damage the roots with a rake. Let the ground dry first, and the lawn wake up. That’s still a few weeks away.

  • Spring Cleanups - If your yard needs a spring cleaning, definitely get that going to pave the way for your first mowing. As mentioned previously, Key2Green has partnered with Gold Coast Landscapes; a full-service provider specializing in spring cleanups, edging, mulching, planting, mowing, and hardscape design. Contact them now for a free estimate.

  • Lawn Mower Care - A definite “yes”! Get that machine ready for the upcoming season – oil change, blades sharpened, fresh gas – and start’er up!

  • Ticks - Key2Green recommends treating ticks very soon. Adult ticks hibernate over winter, are waking up now, and soon will be active. Even though we had a harsh winter, which could knock back the tick population, deer – a common host for ticks – also have ventured closer to homes looking for food and shrubs to feed on. That could mean more ticks falling off deer and onto your lawn and border areas. Key2Green is licensed and trained to treat ticks, so call now for treatment!

  • Lawn Aeration - This is recommended at any time once the ground is firm and the grass is actively growing. Key2Green’s unique, proprietary “precision aeration” technique uses a smaller walk-behind commercial reciprocating aerator machine. This provides a more targeted and effective – and less-messy/damaging treatment – than large machinery. Contact Key2Green for free estimate now!

  • Lawn Tunnels - These are most likely made by voles and not moles or mice. Did you know that voles are rodents, and moles are insectivores? (big difference here). The good news is that once your lawn mower starts humming, voles and mice will move on to

safer areas away from your lawn, enabling it to rapidly repair on its own. There is no need for pesticide treatment for this, especially since the poison used can harm other animals that hunt for them (e.g., hawks, owls, foxes, cats, etc.). Moles aren’t active yet, but if you see them, definitely give Key2Green a call and I can take care of them too.

The Key2Green Advantage: Professional Expertise Compared To The “Big Box” Option

The appeal of a cheap price can be tempting, but it often comes at a cost. “big-box” lawn treatment companies focus on volume. They push cheap, inferior, watered-down products designed not for you, the customer, but for their own quick profits, leaving you and your lawn needing and wanting more.

At Key2Green, quality and service are my priority. I use superior Lesco® premium granule products (family / pet / environment-safe) and proven fertilization methods that feed your lawn for six to eight weeks, unlike the diluted liquids “big boxes” use, which only feed for a week or two. Furthermore, the pre-emergent weed protection I use provides much longer-lasting protection from weeds and crabgrass. Frankly, there’s just no comparison. And, fun fact: Key2Green has successfully retained EVERY customer from 2025 for 2026 — a great testament about their satisfaction. I sincerely thank all my returning Key2Green customers!

While Key2Green may not be the cheapest option, please remember that you’re getting far more “bang for your bucks”: superior product quality; dedicated service; and local, personal care for you, the valued customer.

When you call, text, or email, Key2Green with a question, you get ME, the owner — a State of Connecticut-licensed fertilization and pesticide supervisor and owner. As the owner, I’m here to answer your questions and ensure your lawn receives the best possible care.

As always, thank you for trusting Key2Green with your lawn. I truly appreciate your continued support and look forward to Unlocking Your Lawn With The Key2Green!

Warm regards,

Jay Pompano
