When The “Wait” For Spring Is Just Too Long…

The Lawn: Patience is a (Green) Virtue

Hello Key2Green Family,

We know the feeling. The snow is finally starting to recede, and after weeks of white and gray, you’re itching to see some color. However, as the Connecticut slush turns to mud, we have one big request: please stay off the grass.

Walking on a waterlogged, thawing lawn can compact the soil and damage the "crown" (the growing point) of the grass plants before they’ve even had a chance to wake up. It’s also far from time for fertilizer yet—putting down product while the ground is still frozen or oversaturated means it won't reach the roots where it belongs. For now, the best thing you can do for your lawn is simply let it dry out.

Spring will be here before we know it—and I can’t wait to help bring the green back to your lawn!

Top Worst Ways to "Wreck" a Lawn

It’s tempting to try and rush Mother Nature, but these "shortcuts" usually end in a call to us to fix the damage:

  1. Overseeding on Snow: Some think throwing seed on top of snow (also referred to “dormant seeding”) helps it "sink in" later. In reality, birds eat most of it, much of it doesn’t germinate at all, and the rest usually washes away in the melt-off before it can ever hit the soil.

  2. Heavy Raking Too Early: Raking "dormant" (brown / muddy) grass while the ground is soft often pulls the grass out by the roots rather than just clearing debris.

  3. Turning on the Sprinklers too soon: Watering while the ground is still saturated can lead to root rot. Nature is providing plenty of moisture right now; you don't need to add to it.

  4. The Paint Roller Technique: OK this one was a joke (you got me LOL — as seen the headline photo). While it definitely solves the color issue, it’s a bit hard on the eyes — and your reputation with the neighbors.

The moral of the story? Hang in there. We’ll have the real deal growing soon enough!

Until then, stay warm and let’s Unlock Your Lawn With The Key2Green!

Warm regards,

Jay Pompano
