Expert Lime Application & Soil Conditioning For Healthier Lawns
Your soil's probably more sour than you think. In Connecticut, rain leaches calcium and magnesium faster than most places, leaving pH dipping into the fives-too low for grass to grab nitrogen or phosphorus. Yellow blades, clumpy moss, dandelions everywhere: classic signs. We start with a quick probe, lab it off-site, then work out exactly how much lime your yard wants-no eyeballing, no guesswork. We use pelletized calcitic lime for most lawns; it spreads like through a drop spreader and breaks down over one winter. If tests show magnesium short, we blend in dolomitic instead. Either way, we drag a light roller so granules hit the crowns without burying them. You won't see fireworks-just quieter watering bills and grass that actually darkens after fertilizing. While we're at it, we check drainage and compaction. Heavy clay around here loves to puddle; a thin top-layer of compost or screened loam loosens things without raising grade. If your soil's thin over bedrock, we might add a slow-release conditioner with humates-keeps nutrients from washing straight into the Sound next storm. Timing matters: late autumn's perfect; frost hasn't locked the ground yet, but the lime has months to react before spring growth. Skip the garden-center bags-they're pricey and often finer than necessary. We use premium quality products, and we precisely calibrate our machines so nothing drifts onto driveways. End result: pH nudges up to six-point-five or seven, roots plunge deeper, turf shrugs off grub damage and late-season drought. Next year you'll cut less often, complain less about bare spots, and maybe even let the kids skip fertiliser arguments altogether.
